Jenna Jameson Retires from Porn. Again.

I haven’t covered much in the way of industry news in this blog yet, but that’s mostly due to the dearth of actual news generated by the industry. But Jenna Jameson managed to make actual news last Saturday at the AVN Awards by very ungraciously announcing her intention to “never ever ever spread [her] legs in this industry ever” while presenting the award named in her honor. You can watch the video of her speech here.

Because I managed to catch a hell of a cold at the AVN show, I’ve had some time to sit and reflect on this incident. Many in the industry are taking it as the ultimate slap in the face from a woman whom many of them personally helped make very wealthy and famous.

Jenna’s relationship with porn is a complicated one (if you’ve read her book you know what I mean) and it should surprise no one that she’s lashing out against it yet again. What comes as a surprise to me, personally, is how much everyone seems to care. This may be a controversial stance, but in my opinion, Jenna Jameson hasn’t mattered in the adult industry in a long time. She stopped shooting movies several years ago and has devoted her time to running her own marginally popular company, appearing on basic cable and getting bad plastic surgery. I’ll be the first one to admit that Jenna was a powerhouse in the 1990’s – beautiful, smart, and most of all, profitable. But as she became the “crossover star” her AVN Award indicates, she left porn behind in search of C-list celebrity.

At this point, Jenna is one of the worst spokespersons we could have. She does nothing good for the industry by repeatedly trying to escape it. What porn really needs is someone like Stormy Daniels, the recipient of Jenna’s “crossover star of the year” award. A woman who loves her job, loves her fans, and who can proudly say (as she did), “I plan on spreading my legs for this industry for quite some time!” Representing a maligned industry is a hard job – one that Jenna is clearly not cut out for anymore. So I say: Let her go. We’re all better off.

  1. jwan Says:

Agreed, Jenna is much like a crazy ex-girlfriend, you had some good times, maybe even have some naughty pictures as a keepsake, but as time goes on you wonder what attracted you to this person in the first place!

Her company as a force, that comment alone was laughable, but she’s right about one thing. There is and big market for crap porn, I imagine she’ll release a couple more “new” movies that won’t be labeled as the glorified comps that they are.

  2. jwan Says:

and before I forget, there’s a fine line in between, getting thin and looking like an orange crack whore. Which makes you wonder if she has any friends that aren’t on her payroll?

  3. dirtybirdy Says:

Alison, does the symptoms of that “cold” include a burning sensation in your “happy place?” Are you experiencing a “drip” or “funky smell?” Have you checking for an accompanied rash or strange growths? ;)

  4. justsomedude Says:

    Tito Ortiz

  5. davros Says:

I remember when she started out in the business she actually shot some decent scenes. It seemed after some time she was just phoning it in, not caring. And her looks ended up heading south as well …

Not that looks are everything. I’ve watched some scenes with women who aren’t the hottest porn stars out there, but they put enthusiasm into the performance. That makes a difference.

  6. HotScooter2 Says:

    Hi Alison:

I have been very impressed i would like to say in how welll you are organizing the blogs.I am another male that is curious about what you look like but can understand your hesitancy in wishing to reveal it. it is probably that you are so hot looking the photo studio would blow up lol.
Seriously in regards to Jenna Jameson retiring i say no loss anyhow. i could never understand her appeal and did not like any of her films even in the 90’s. there have been at least 50 or 60 female pornstars through the years that were much better. i personally prefer the actresses in the classics including both amber and ginger lynn. Bunny Bleu and some of the newer ones such as Katie Morgan.
I think it is great you added Rope to your team.
    a cyber hug to Alison

  7. CMoney Says:

Her time has passed, so who cares.

  8. alison Says:

jwan – She does have that Britney Spears-esque break with reality that makes you think no one’s giving it to her straight, doesn’t she?

dirtybirdy – Haha, the only drippage going on here is strictly sinus-related, mister. ;)

justsomedude – I kinda wonder how much he had to do with her transformation into, as commenter jwan put it, an orange crack whore.

davros – I agree with you completely. Energy and enthusiasm are far more important than looks. It’s unfortunate that she seems to have lost both. Plenty of other fish in the porn sea, though.

HotScooter2 – Thank you very much for the cyber hug. And the compliment :) The truth is that some will be into what I look like and some won’t, but as long as you’re enjoying reading the blog, I’m happy. As for Jenna, you’re right. Plenty of other stars of her time were far better performers. It’s curious that she rose to the level of fame that she did in some ways.

    CMoney – Amen.

  9. mudshark Says:

If she would only keep her promise. She will be back. The reason the mainstream is attracted to her is that she is a porn star. The minute she isn’t the porn star they are not so attracted. which means no more lame guest appearances on VH1 ‘best of’, ‘la ink’ and the other garbage shows she shows up on. The pay rate of these shows is probably ten fold of one porn performance but the sad truth is one way or another she is still going to have to put out to get it.

  10. Maegorfromwow Says:

Alison, you know I love the blog. Another great update. Idk how I missed Jenna’s announcement. Probably because it doesn’t really matter. “Clubjenna: Powerhouse”…right. She doesn’t even look like a real person anymore.

As a side note, I had thought to ask you to post a pic of yourself, but I figured if you were comfortable w/ the idea then you would do it yourself.

  11. dirtybirdy Says:

Haha, leave the girl alone. Porn is at least partly about fantasy, but you guys don’t need to be fantasizing about the girl behind the blog. She is just a normal girl working a normal job just like any of us. Nobody is asking what Rope looks like! That said, Alison, you ARE very cute (heh, that one might keep her wondering for a moment or two.) By the way Alison, I have a very simple customer service issue which I think was handled horribly. I almost left the site a while back because of it and I still might due to the nature of the problem. Is there any chance I could run it by you? Can you email me, or can I email you? I would use the contact form but I lost my faith in that thing. My email address in attached to the comment if you can. If not, no big deal. :(

  12. Brinkman Says:

Man, that speech was painful to watch. Yeah, Jenna, you paved the way for porn’s crossover to the mainstream. Narcissistic much? It’s technology – the VCR, the internet, the DVD – and the massive amount of money that’s brought into the adult industry that’s shed some mainstream light on it. If porn was still on 8mm and in seedy theaters and back rooms, no one would be talking about Jenna.

  13. adversity Says:

    dirtybirdy: don’t be creepy.

  14. dirtybirdy Says:

Geez, I was telling everyone else not to be creepy and I guess I am no different… except that I am a Ninja!

  15. alison Says:

mudshark – You’re right. She’s selling herself either way.

Maegorfromwow – Thank you very much. And you’re right. I might end up posting a pic one of these days, but it might take a while for me to get comfortable with the idea. I appreciate that you understand my point of view.

dirtybirdy – Thanks…I think ;) I’ll definitely get in touch with you about your customer service issue. Is it okay if I shoot you an email when I get back to the office? I have your addy from the comment form.

Brinkman – That’s an interesting point. In this day and age, do you think there will ever be another Jenna?

adversity – Thanks for having my back :)

  16. dizzle55 Says:

i dont wanna be harsh about it, cause im not in the industry and, i kinda enjoyed her announcement(secretly?). she probably has a good sense of humor about herself that didnt have an outlet..and up on the stage at the AVN awards..while passing the (performer) torch – seems an opportune time / justifiable. im not above supporting Jenna feeling pleased about herself. its just a fitting as the pleasure most of the known world has enjoyed through her work.. especially me.

  17. dirtybirdy Says:

Sure Allison, whenever you get a chance is fine with me.

  18. justsomedude Says:

“I kinda wonder how much he had to do with her transformation into, as commenter jwan put it, an orange crack whore”

Supposedly something went amiss after some re-constructive surgery down below. I follow MMA very closely and Tito has changed drastically since they got together. He seems much more mature and shrewed but a whiny baby who is never happy.

They do really seem to care for one another though. He has even gone as far as professing his love for her after a fight. He was once scheduled to speak at a Marine base, they asked him to not bring her so he told them to F-Off. If I remember correctly he did a free autograph signing off base to make it up to the marines.

  19. justsomedude Says:

alison…and as for the pic…eh….you might not want to ever do that. I run a rather large forum and people on the internet can get weird. Best to leave us guessing with our imagination. I picture you as the younger version on Tiffany Mynx who helped me through puberty and I would rather leave it at that. hah

  20. Strangepork Says:

Alison asked “do you think there will ever be another Jenna?” – but I’m not sure I know what the first one was. As far as I can tell, she was an over-rated performer who somehow managed to get much more attention than she ever deserved… unless somebody can explain to me what is/was so special about her.
As far as performers who would make good spokespeople for the industry, how about Nina Hartley? She’s been through it all, still performs from time to time, and put out a pretty good series of instructional movies as well. I think she’s got a great attitude toward sex, and is well qualified to be the ambassador from porn-land. As for the award, what the hell is a “crossover star” and why was Nick “Dropping Fucking Loads” Manning one of the nominees?

  21. dirtybirdy Says:

Yeah, I agree. I don’t think anyone really needs to know what you look like. Not unless you are trying to create some sort of personal branding, sort of like a “Scoble of porn.” And we may be weird, but that is what you inherited. You have to take the good with the bad.

  22. justsomedude Says:

“And we may be weird, but that is what you inherited. You have to take the good with the bad.”

    Right on!

  23. HotScooter2 Says:

    Hi Allison:

Cyberhug.dang girl i am gettin fresh withya, and lovin every minute of it.. i been thinkin it over as well and as much as i would like to see what you look like,i think for security reasons you are best off not revealing it.You are doing as terrific job as is Rope with the blog thing.
as far as the Jenna thing i doubt if anything could turn me around and be a fan of hers. i was not a fan of hers in the 90’s or any time and am not one now

  24. MasonSquelch Says:

I think this is typical for former celebrities who never learned to change priorities when it got time to do so. Instead, they try to get attention again and again. This is a common pattern and the only annoying fact about that is that there’s always a platform for these people. But for the media the ’scandal’ will always be more attractive than a spokesperson who ‘behaves’ well.

  25. Brinkman Says:

alison – “Will there do you think there will ever be another Jenna?” I’m not sure. But I’m also not sure what Jenna is really besides the best known and most recognizable face of porn. In her heyday she was a good performer – she was enthusiastic and seemed to enjoy what she was doing – but I don’t think there was anything that made her stand head and shoulders above the other female performers. I’m sure the only reason she is as well known as she is is because of relentless self-promotion.

And though this AVN award may be named for her, what has she crossed over to exactly? Adult performers making cameos in mainstream projects, while technically “crossing over”, really means very little. The casting directors didn’t chose these adult performers for their acting abilities. This is certainly the case with Jenna – she couldn’t act her way out of a three walled room with a giant arrow pointing the way. Adult performers are cast to make these projects seem edgy and to (possibly) bring some additional free publicity. Just because Stormy Daniels had a small role on “Dirt” and was in 5 seconds of “The 40 Year Old Virgin” doesn’t mean she’ll suddenly have a career in TV and movies. At best she’ll appear in these tiny, inconsequential roles and soon the casting directors will move on to a fresher, newer porn starlet.

If ever there comes a time when an adult performer is able to use porn as a stepping stone to an A-list mainstream entertainment career, then that will be news. I say A-list because Tracy Lords has worked pretty steadily in B grade projects for years, occasionally finding her way onto shows like Will and Grace and Gilmore Girls, but it’s not like she’ll be winning Academy Awards any time soon (or ever). Tracy managed to ride the publicity of her underaged sex scandal to TV shows and movies, but if all her adult movies were done while she was of legal age I doubt very much she would ever have appeared on prime time TV. Without the underage sex, there’s no story there.

Though I suppose it’s in the realm of the possible – in the same way that some actresses begin their careers in the pages of Playboy – I think it’s highly unlikely that porn will open doors to mainstream A-list entertainment anytime soon, if ever. An industry were all the perfomers take stage names to protect their identities doesn’t lend itself to legitimacy.

  26. Chance Says:

I have to play devil’s advocate here for a second: I think most of us who have thought about it for more than a minute realize that the porn industry has some pretty serious downsides to it, compared to other career choices. If she wants to get out again, who am I to criticize? And who here hasn’t complained about their career field at least once? Cut the woman some slack.

  27. Brinkman Says:

Chance – What people are having a problem with is not that she is retiring, but how she worded it. The statement “I will never ever ever spread my legs again in this industry ever” is awfully contemptuous considering everything she has and is comes from “spreading [her] legs in this industry”.

  28. firesnype Says:

Jenna who? what has she done in the last ten years in porn? go ahead and retire. Bad mouting what made you famous like Tiki Barber does to the Giants. Suck a dick Tiki (and you to Jenna). GO GIANTS!!

  29. Giamessi Says:

She quit because she can’t compete against new talent: Naomi Russell, Velicity Von, Missy Monroe, etc…Its 2008, there is no room for scripted porn; it’s about performance. And just for the record, she looks like crap in that picture anyways.

  30. sundubys Says:

Honestly who cares!!! If the woman wants to leave porn then so be it, if she doesnt enjoy the work any more then more power to her, I honestly am not going to lose any sleep over this, because last time I checked their were hotter porn stars then Jenna Jamison, especially now that she looks like a scare crow…

  31. hiflyin77 Says:

Very well written commentary Alison. I totaly agree that Jenna’s time in the spotlight has come and gone, and she can’t stand it. So now she has to come out and try to make herself someone inportant again. It’s really very sad.

Hope you’re feeling better, keep up the good work

  32. Val Says:

Many celebs are panned when they are vulnerable, e.g., dealing with issues, downs, etc. Jenna, the porn-media-darling of not so many years ago, I suppose, like many female celebrities, is freaking because she’s getting old.Is Jameson really the predominent force behind the apparent push of porn into the mainstream? Well, she certainly knows the business. Her flicks always have been wildly popular and profitable. She produced/directed some of her porn, like, I Dream of Jenna, Jenna’s Provocateur, Bella Loves Jenna, etc. Not unimportantly, Club Jenna is a major player in cyberporn. It’s worth noting that, in spite of the goofy nature of porn movies, they still have to be made, with camera crews, set designers, wardrobe, etc. I don’t think that producing and directing is a no-brainer; Jameson can’t be running on empty.Whether Jameson truly has “crossed over” is debatable. Some consider her to be a mainstream celebrity because: she attended the red-carpet premiere of NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice”; was featured in an advertisement for iRiver; appearanced in, among others, The Apprentice, The Simple Life, The Tyra Banks Show, The O’Reilly Factor, Family Guy, Da Ali G Show; and, “acted” in some non-porn movies. (I can’t wait to see the much anticipated Zombie Strippers). The porn queen also has garnered some twisted legitimacy because she wrote a “book” titled, unsurprisingly, Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale, and even went on a national book-signing tour with lines of fans/buyers around the block in each scheduled city. Pretty rich, eh?If Rolling Stone is any indication of American zeitgeist, perhaps the following exceprt from its article on Jameson is telling of the future of porn crossover:”Jenna Jameson is the actress who “put the star in porn star,” and to New York Magazine she’s a “cultural icon.” Recognized by Adult Video News as the leading female adult star of all time, she has won virtually every honor the adult industry bestows. She has written a highly anticipated book on her life and sexual adventures for the ReganBooks imprint of HarperCollins, and was profiled by The E! True Hollywood Stories in one of its highest-rated shows of 2003. She has had numerous mainstream movie and television roles, has hosted E!’s Wild On program, has made countless television appearances and has debated at Oxford University in England. Ms. Jameson controls her own film production company and is the chairwoman of ClubJenna, Inc., a product licensing and Internet management firm that handles the Web activities for more than a dozen top adult stars. Vivid Entertainment Group has selected Jenna as a Vivid Girl and films produced by her own production company are distributed by Vivid. Ms. Jameson, who began her career as a Las Vegas showgirl, has appeared in more than 1,000 magazines articles and graced approximately 400 magazine covers from Playboy, New York, Esquire and Penthouse to Glamour, Paper, Cosmopolitan, Allure and Jane. FHM ranks her as one of the 100 Most Beautiful Girls in the World and VH1 says she is among the 100 Hottest Hotties”.Whatever the case may be, I need Scarlet Johansen to do Jenna.

  33. Val Says:

Jeeze, I wish my html tags had worked :(

  34. jpbarrows Says:

thank god she finally quit, she is the lamest excuse for a porn actress, her movies were horrible and she was just plain lousy. i pity all the actors and actreses that had to work with her. good ridance, now go flop in the real movies………..

  35. 14karma Says:

Good, Jenna looks like shit now anyways

  36. grandpappy Says:

That video left a lot to be desired, but if I had watched it without knowing who she was, I wouldn’t have recognized her. She looks like a bag of hammered shit as far as I’m concerned, but I never was a big fan of phony blondes with bogus tits anyway. Bye Jenna and please stay retired.
