Want to Make Porn? Here’s Your Chance

When I saw this on AVN, I knew I had to post it. Apparently, Courtney Cummz (former Zero Tolerance contract girl, current pornstar for hire) is hosting a three-day seminar in Florida at the end of March to teach people how to make porn. It’s called Porn Camp. That’s right, Porn Camp.

The whole thing costs $4k (which probably doesn’t include room and board). That might be really cheap or a fortune depending on who you are and why you’re at porn camp. I’ve not seen any of Ms. Cummz’s directorial work, so I won’t hazard a guess about the quality of the instruction to be had, but if you really can learn how to set up a production company, book talent, shoot scenes, get a distributor and win an AVN award, I guess it’s a good deal.

Oh, and according to the website, “YOU WILL SHOOT AN ADULT FILM SCENE DURING THE SEMINAR.” Sadly, they don’t have a list of the talent. That’s porn for ya.

Update: Apparently Sean Michaels is having a similar seminar starting tomorrow in the LA area. Evidently, teaching people how to make porn has become a cottage industry.

    Hey Alison:

Anyway i can get a two for one special,or a senior discount. Maybe i buy 5 and get a complimentary power jackpot ticket. No offense maam but these are not exactly bargain basement prices.

If i were to win a Ron Jeremy look alike contest could i win free admission. Talkin as a southerner, dagburn it girl you sure is fun to tease.

it’s cool i guess for those that can afford it. as they say here in the south “you got style girl”

oh Alison one thing that turns me off in the DVD reviews is when people make political comments or especially anti Obama jokes. i may be white but i despise rascism. and besides politics is totally irrelevant to reviewing DVD’s on this site.

Keep doing what you been doing because you are basically doing a good job

Interesting. I’m sure many of us have often wondered what it takes to get involved behind the scenes in the industry. The fact that you will film a scene and walk away with distribution rights for it at the end makes it seem like you’ll really be getting a foot in the door. But I’m sure it’s not as easy as all of that.

  3. out4fun3 Says:

    Hi Alison:
I have read over the years a few interviews with some of the girls who did porn (ie Seka, Christy Canyon). The one thing that struck me is how hardened these girls seemed. I am curious being as close to the porn industry as you are, what is your sense as to the main differences between girls that did porn yesteryear vs. today.

You mentioned awhile back you only collect things from the AVN convention if it is unusual or different. What have you picked up over the years?

  4. zarafan Says:

I have a sense that many of the women working in porn arrive on the scene already hardened; it’s hard to imagine that they have many illusions from the outset, either about human nature or the business they have chosen, and I would expect that those who do either lose them very quickly or leave without making much of an impact. But I’d be interested in hearing Alison’s comments as well, and as always!

  5. alison Says:

HotScooter2 – Hahaha, you know, when I finally found out how much it was (they don’t tell you until you fill out a registration form), I couldn’t believe it. The next thing I thought was “man, how do I get into the $4,000 seminar business!?”
To address the racism issue, I want you to know that it’s our policy to delete racist comments. So if there’s something we missed, please do let me know. We have no tolerance for that crap.

Strangepork – I assume you have distribution rights to it, but knowing pornographers, it wouldn’t surprise me if you didn’t. To be honest, if you have $50k and a little business sense, you can get into making porn. It helps to know someone, but there are new people popping up every day.

out4fun3 – I’ve only met a few of the “classic” stars, so I probably don’t have as much to say on the topic as someone like Content Dude, but my take is that women who’ve been in the industry longer than a couple years are definitely more hardened than the fresh meat (pardon the expression). Porn is a hard job and not everyone can hack it. It probably takes some internal toughness to keep at it as long as those ladies have.
As for what I’ve picked up at AVN, there’s the strange schwag like branded garment bags and beach balls. But my favorite thing to do at shows is have pornstars say hello to my friends on video. A friend joked this year that soon he’d be able to make a DVD of pornstars saying hi to him.

zarafan – I’ve had the privilege of meeting a couple of girls at the very beginning of their careers and they are, for the most part, very sweet and usually a tiny bit naive. I definitely think it’s porn that makes them hardened. The average lifespan of a girl in porn is about a year (maybe a bit less). Girls get burned out pretty quick. I think you either develop the hard shell or you run screaming.

  6. Strangepork Says:

alison – The site claims you get distribution rights, but that may not mean what I think it does. Anyway, what do you do with one scene? I’d think you’d have to shoot 4 more on your own to make a marketable movie. Which leads to the question of initial investment to get started… I’m curious where you got the $50k figure, and what you are figuring into that.

As for the seminar, I don’t know if its work $4k, but it does look like it gives a lot of practical information that a person wouldn’t find on their own just starting out. I’d say you need a solid understanding of the business and a good plan before you even think about hiring talent. Are their any better sources for this knowledge that you could recommend?

  7. sundubys Says:

Wow what a rip off, you can start your whole production with about 5k, if your just starting out…

  8. alison Says:

Strangepork – I suppose you could sell one scene to a paysite. But in reality, no one would buy it. $50k figures in your equipment/labor costs and the fact that you have to have a couple of movies in the can before anyone will take you seriously enough to distribute your product. To be honest, there are very few good sources for that kind of info. Pornographers have every reason to want to keep that knowledge to themselves.

sundubys – $5k is a bit low. For a half-decent movie, you’ll probably end up paying $2k+ per scene in performer fees (rates have gone up in the last few years), plus equipment to shoot with, equipment/expertise in editing, then authoring DVDs/making covers/etc. If you’d rather go the internet route, trade DVD costs in for paying someone to deal with your website and the storage/bandwidth to make it work.

  9. sundubys Says:

ok fine 10k to start up, you get a partner and you go in 50/50, that way you dont spend 5k on a bullshit seminar. Editing, and other type of movie related situations can be self handled since technology has made that possible, I can take a video camera with HD capabilities, get a couple of actors/actresses put masks on them, lets say canidates who are running, and call it some snazzy name like “presidential cumaholics” dont ask I’m just throwing stuff out their, edit the whole thing on windows movie maker, laminate the cd’s my self, and sell them to porn shop vendors or studio vendors, and believe me they will buy it, I’ve seen it done it’s ridiculous but that’s how you get your feet wet. After a little profit you make a better film, hire some better talent, get better equipment, etc…

It’s not hard to start any company you just need the business savy, and some capital to get you going, do you want a good example take realitykings.com for example, the owner of the company is my friend he got his brain storm on a trip to Rosarito, Mexico on a 4th july trip, he had his camcorder he video taped some things that gave him a great idea, and he ran with it, so every weekend he would go down to Mexico get some cheap talent until he made enough to get some decent names, after that his sight boomed, and look at it now ridiculous…

  10. john Says:

    love the website!

just a quick suggestion.. more recommendations! i remember a previous post where a user was recommending some past vids and loved it! we need more!

  11. speakeroftheobvious Says:

Dear god, we’re actually deep conversation and comments on the financial and social aspects of pornography. Someone should yell something about how, “I’ma shoot a hot pron scene and it’ll have no _____ cuz that’s lame, buta lotta _____ cuz I think that rules and lack proper grammar.” Sorry, it’s been a long week and I was just hoping to laugh at lame comments.

On a serious note, these seminars probably would at least get people one step closer to a career in pornography and learning the technical aspects that one usually can’t find information about. Still, what if it is all a ploy to get people to pay to shoot a pornographic scene, collect these various scenes into some sort of, “All-Amateur” film that has newbie actors and camera-workers , and make a nice mint off of it? That would in fact be ingenious if the people don’t own scene rights….

  12. sundubys Says:

That’s why I’m saying it’s a bullshit seminar, sorry for all the gramatical errors I speak several languages so I get confused sometimes how shit comes out…

  13. walken Says:

Would it be possible to do an article on how much porn stars get paid? I’m curious to how the pay schedule would even work, you know, how much $$$ does a blowjob scene differ to a double anal gangbang with a midget… for example. How much does a relatively new girl get compared to someone like Jewel Dnyle??

By the way, love the blog and everyones comments. Great work!!!

  14. alison Says:

sundubys and speakeroftheobvious – I think it’s worth pointing out here that we’re talking about different things. I’m referring to what it would cost to start a production company making Zero Tolerance/Red Light District/Combat Zone-quality movies. You’re talking about what it’d cost to start making amateur movies. Both are valid ways to get into porn, but these seminars are geared toward teaching you how to do the former, not the latter. Whether they’re bullshit or not is a wholly different argument. Though I doubt we disagree on that point.

john – From what I understand, Ropeadope2 is currently in his porn skylab formulating a new archival list of suggestions. Keep an eye out for that in the next couple of weeks.

walken – I’ll do a little research on that for you. There are some people at talent agencies I could get some rough numbers from, I think. If so, I’ll definitely make a post about it.

  15. BigErection Says:

    I like big boobs.

  16. sundubys Says:

I understand what your saying Alison, but it’s just hard for me to fathom after taking a seminar that I’m going to start a upper eschelon company, weather I have capital or not. Most of the companies you mentioned were small time for awhile, amateurs them selves. The only way people can make money is if their was a company in porn who franchised their name out, then I would go to that seminar.

  17. alison Says:

sundubys – I totally agree that imagining that you can learn everything about the porn biz in three days is ridiculous. I think these seminars are a scam to get money from people who have it, don’t know what to do with it, and want to make more off of porn.

  18. DP Says:

Heck I think I’d avoid that seminar just to avoid the stage anxiety!! Those male performers have a real gift !

  19. hiflyin77 Says:

Hey Alison, cyberhug. I think you and sundubys are right on the ball. I think this is just a sad way to take money from people who don’t know any better, or think that they’re gonna be instant stars off of this. Although you never know if the next big star might come out of this. Every once in a while it seems like a porn star is created from someone who never actually had any ambition to be in the business, or never worked in the clubs. Oh well, as long as there are suckers there will be people to take advantage of them. Cheers

  20. hiflyin77 Says:

Maybe VB can do an “American Idol” spin off. Call it ‘American Porn Star’. Rope and Alison could be the judges. This could be huge!!

  21. ropeadope2 Says:

hiflyin77 – Just tell me when and where to report and I’m there.

  22. totallove Says:

whos the girl in the pic ?

  23. hiflyin77 Says:

    totallove-That’s Courtney Cummz

  24. grypht Says:

$4000 dollars, huh? Well, I expect my directorial and filming debut with Courtney Cummz to be a P.O.V. scene…

  25. Richard Says:

Well $4,000 is a bit much but if it is useful info if you are getting in the business that is well money spent!
But on the other hand I do agree with you saying that it is for people that have money to toss around trying to find another nitch in making money.
I would say this, find some people like friends that wouldn’t mind getting involved in the porn business and find some actors that like getting undressed and having sex in front of the camera for the fun and the money and that is a good start to begin with.
And everyone starts out small before they get big! and you will learn the pros and cons as you go, just becareful on the laws and having a good written contract for the actors working for you, this can be a big down fall if you have a bad written contract to protect you and them.
There is many people out there that will have sex for money and I have proved that to one of my friends some years back, we were in a bar and he said man I would love to take that girl home and do her! and I said go try! and he failed! then I went over to her and just starting talking with her and she was not stuck up and she was HOT HOT! a 10+ so any way I told her my friend would really like to make it with you and she said to me he is not my type! and I said what is your type then? she went on about this and that and then I asked her! if I gave you a $1,000.00 right now would you go sleep with him? and she looked at me like I was crazy and I am! and then she well maybe if I see the money first! and guess what! I had to wip out that $1,000.00 that night! and he got laid by that HOT babe.
I know I could get anyone to do just about anything for money! and I could get you to eat crap if the money was right!
One last thing, When I was a kid I use to do something for the fun of it and then I got a sponsor and they had to make money off me and then it wasn’t fun any more because they pushed me to do new tricks so the crowd would like it more and after that I lost my feeling for what I was doing right then even though I was getting paid to perform in the publics eye.
You have to like what you are doing and that helps a whole lot.
I know of a few people in the porn business and they go way back in the early 80’s and they still are making money at it and they love it and say they wouldn’t do anything else for a living.
I think this! there is not enough focus in porn on men for women watchers out there! it is all around the women for men!
Men are more open for this and women like to be more discreet about sex since they are the so called blame of being called a slut and or whore but not a man?
This has got to change and women like watching porn too! so why don’t someone do something about it and film some porn focused on men for women and not women for men!
