Porn directors are key...their most important duties are
1) Casting
2) Creating a mood or "script" for the scene. Allowing the performers sexiness to come out and not put too heavy an "idea" on the scene.
3) Staying out of the way by not talking to the talent much (I HATE this guy who sounds like he is about to splooge when he talks to the girls at the beginning and middle of the scenes). Instructing the girls NOT to look at the camera.
4) Shooting angles that show off the girls.
5) insisting that the stuntcock keep his hands off his cock and let the girl finish him off.

A truly interesting subject, and one that I regret coming to so late in the discussion.

One historical anecdote, to put things perhaps in perspective: Melvin van Peebles shot a "blaxploitation" film nearly 40 years ago called "Sweet Sweetback's Baaad-Ass Song" (you can't make this stuff up!!). This was an era of extraordinarily expanding cinematic liberties (the rating system had just been installed in America, enabling among other innovations the world of porn as we currently know it) and the line separating mainstream cinema from porn was not yet fixed; "Midnight Cowboy" was technically an "X" rated film which won the Best Picture Oscar (deservedly) and couples lined up around the block to see "Deep Throat" at movie theaters (perhaps deservedly, perhaps not...). Anyway, Peebles' (very, VERY weird) film actually included real, somewhat graphically depicted sex, and on camera Peebles (who starred in the film, along with his son Mario, who at ~ 12 also has sex on camera...) actually contracted Gonorrhea. He filed a claim with the Screen Actors Guild since the "injury," after all, was incurred while on the job.... SAG honored the claim, and he used the money they reimbursed him with to finish financing the film...!

Nonetheless in our at least more medicinally enlightened era I absolutely agree with Elegant Angels; there's no reason for a production company to finance self-destructive behavior, even if the "director" is incurring the risk.

Your poll, Alison, is an interesting one and needless to say I have my preferences: particularly Christoph Clark (surprise, surprise, I picked a European...!), Rocco Siffredi, Manuel Ferrara (the film VB recently posted starring Brianna Love is simply incredible and uncharacteristically I took the time to watch every single scene: an ideal porno collaboration between the director and the star...), John Leslie (who has also worked well with Brianna Love at the beginning of her career), and Brandon Iron.

I'm disappointed that I didn't choose any women in your poll, but I can't recall having seen their work or having noticed if their style differs notably from the men whose work I enjoy. I also debated whether to include John Stagliano, since he was such a pioneer of the porno I like: "natural" scenarios, hand-held cameras, European stars, anal sex.... But even though I admire both his role in the history of porn, and am grateful for his introducing my namesake Zara Whites to Rocco Siffredi (the hottest couple, in my opinion, in porn history to date), his movies just aren't as well shot as the other directors I voted for.

Do I think about this stuff too much?!

Thanks again for a great question, Alison, and best wishes until next time....

A couple of years ago it would've been Jules Jordan hands down but some of his recent movies have been a real let down. Jay Sin has taken his mantle for me, ok he does some crazy shit with toys and milk and stuff which may not be everyone's taste (me neither) but once the sex starts his scenes are incredibly well shot, really great camera angles.

I agree with the votes for Vince Vouyer he is outstanding plus his new movies have bonus scenes where every actress does a POV scene in addition to her scene in the movie. Great value for money and I love POV porn.

I also think Brian Pumper is a decent director, not seen his Evil Angel stuff but the movies he did for Black Ice were top notch. Fuck My White Ass and also Fuck This Face Then My Butt in particular are two awesome movies. Not to excuse his latest actions however.

@ ticklemegonzo - I'm a big fan of reality based porn as well. I was with RK a very long time ago, before I became aware of VideoBox. VideoBox is my all time favorite site, in part due to the wide variety of available genres. Be sure to check out the VB offerings fron the studio Pink Visual for some excellent reality scenes.

ropeadope Says:
My votes went to Uncle Vinny, Jake the Snake, Cezar “Don’t Call Me Al” Capone, Brandon, and Rocco.

Hey ropeadope; mine did too (except for uncle vinny...) capone and rocco are at the top of my list. interesting thing about the capone stuff is i hear some people not liking the "reality" based porn that people are doing. well, i happen to love it. realitykings is one of the top sites and thats all they do. how can something be so popular and not so popular at the same time? keep the reality thing coming and ill keep buying.

Your top 4 winners are right on par. Vince Vouyer, Belladonna, Cezar Capone and Brandon Iron are truly leading the the industry as directors right now. I think Belladonna is making remarkable leaps for a woman director and Capone is coming up so fast from just starting a few years ago. Each has their own key to sucess. Vouyer has his stars, Belladonna has the dark side, Capone has the newest girls and "angels that are easy to stroke" and Brandon hits a little of each. I think this is a shoot out between Voyer, Belladonna and Capone to be honest. It is a shame to see a legend like Paul Thomas NOT in the top running though. Jules would be right there with the above mentioned if he were on here for sure.

Hey all,
Just to let you know, I didn't include guys like Jules Jordan and Robbie D because they're not represented on VB. I could've gone either way (believe me, I debated it), but in the end, I figured it'd be better to keep it to folks whose work every member of VB definitely has access to.
For my part, had Jules Jordan been included in the list, I would certainly have voted for him.

Shooting gonzo probably does entail the less is more and shut up ethos. And if that's all you are looking for, then I suppose you guys are right. To make an obviously unfair and condescending analogy, if you want to read nursery rhymes, fine; I prefer novels and essays of depth and content. So I like the feature stuff and the stuff with the costumes and even the experimental lighting and weird soundtracks. It does not always interfere with the sex; context and fantasy can add to the eroticism of a sex scene. Many times I read comments that the director's arty-ness made scenes unwatchable. I'll watch the scene and find it hot. Now I'm going to be even more condescending: Maybe the next time there should be two polls, one for unimaginative people who like close-ups of anal sphincters and one for people with imagination.

In today's porn of "I'm a genius directors " the ones that shine the most are the ones that do the least, with the fewest twists & turns. They could put 3 cameras on tripods and remotely switch angles every few minutes and I believe we would have better products. You can notice the same girl in different studios how different she comes across when the scene is shot in a basic manner her beauty is captured better. How studios ruin what should be marvelous scenes is a real pet peeve of mine.
