Roku Channel Updated

Everyone,

Just in time for the weekend: the VideoBox Roku channel has nice, full-screen preview images and the full set of fast-forward/rewind images once more. Thank you all for your patience as we worked with our content system to get the right images in place.

Next up in our Roku World, we will be adding HLS video streaming which provides the right bitrate for your bandwidth, like you see with Netflix and many other video-streaming providers. This work is already underway, and I will update this post as soon as it is live.

    This HLS video streaming that provides “the right bitrate for your bandwidth” similar to what netflix has? I’m not sure this is a good thing at all. On netflix most of the time you start a video is will start off in a lower quality in order to load faster and then clears up as the stream plays along. I hope this is not going to be the case with videobox on Roku because I want all of my videos to play at full quality right from the start.

    All this is going to do is diminish the video quality if the internet connection slows down instead of completely stopping and buffering. I think Roku customers should have the option to choose which they prefer. I am not a fan of this adaptive streaming and I already have a feeling this is going to be a problem. I hope you Videobox programmers have thought of this before making this change.

    I just know that if I start getting lower quality playback and videos that load in poor quality all the time it will seriously impact my decision going forward whether or not to continue to subscribe.

    @Mike: we haven’t launched that feature yet, but it should go out very soon. Let’s see how it goes and take it from there; our tests have been very promising indeed.

    When attempting to play a video on Roku it only plays 50% of the time. Most of the time the progress bar does not move and I give up after 30-60 seconds. The rest of the time, it takes a good 10-15 seconds for the video to start. And most of the time when moving forward in a video there are no thumbnails and so I have no idea when to stop. Prior to January 29th I did not have any of these issues. 2 thumbs down for whatever you guys did to screw up my VB Roku experience.

    My videos load between 3 and 7 seconds depending on whether they are in HD or not, I am getting the thumbnails when I fast forward and rewind so that sounds very strange you are having problems. The point here is that the streaming on Roku works just fine and there is no need to be making any changes to it. I care nothing about adding this “HLS Video Streaming” which could potentially cause problems. What I care about is the outdated and extremely limited Roku app itself.

    Why is there no talk about updating the Roku search? You can’t search by Studio, director, or star like you can on the site. The Star stash is pretty useless because it only shows the 50 most recent scenes from the star you stashsed when it should be showing every single scene which that star has available on VB so you can scroll through them all. Not to mention the rows and categories only show the 50 most recent titles available. The only way to really see content on Roku is to know exactly what you want to type in to search for, or fill your stash up with a ton of movies so you can scroll through more options.

    The DVD stash isn’t very good either, it only shows the 20 newest movies added, and only shows 20 more movies per clicking the load button. So you have to click load more a ton of times to see the back end of your folder if you have a lot stashed. There should be a sorting option like the site has so you can view titles in alphabetical order, by date added to stash, or at the very least an option to view oldest to newest as well as newest to oldest so we can actually view the back end of our stashed folders without clicking “show more” dozens of times.

    The app is what needs a completely new redesign leave the streaming part alone because it already works just fine. The app is very simple, limited, and looks very out of date, concentrate there before messing with the videos which are playing fine right now. So, are there any plans for an actual Roku app upgrade? Or is it just this new video streaming bit and nothing else?

    Mike, I’m glad to hear yours is working fine. However, I did not start having these problems until this update which is a strong indication that the problem lies with VB, not my Roku.

    @jestegans: your problem sounds like it may be something at your end, and we have had good results with troubleshooting these kind of complaints with our CDN provider. Please send an email via our contact form and provide your IP address (visit http://www.whatismyip.com/ to get it) and you will get additional instructions. Please allow 24-48 hours for a reply, and hit me up here if you do not get one in that timeframe.

    @Mike: I agree, our Roku channel is due for an upgrade. We are trying to figure out where that fits into our roadmap.

    The only problem I have is that it does not show all the Movies I have in my stash. I have about 600+ in My Movies,but only loads 20 at a time and only goes up to 101 and that is it, so I really can’t watch my video’s on Roku past 101, so I am missing out on hundreds of the video’s I have in my stash. I should be able to load all 600+ video’s.
