Lisa Ann: Serra Paylin

Lisa Ann Nailin Paylin
TMZ did a quick on the street interview with Lisa Ann, star of Hustler’s upcoming movie Nailin’ Paylin.

With the glasses on, she looks like a halfway decent Palin. Let’s see how well she gets the accent down.

John Stagliano Interview

Below is a video of an interview with John Stagliano regarding his obscenity prosecution. I’m not sure how old it is (the interview was done in April), but If you’re seriously interested in this case or obscenity law in general, this is a pretty in-depth discussion of the topic. If you’re more interested in John Stagliano’s life and the history of porn, start the video about halfway through.

Introducing the Tech Guy and iPhone 3g/2.0 Problems

iPhone
I’ve been meaning to write a blog entry for a while, but I hadn’t quite gotten around to it when we ran into this iPhone issue. So I thought I’d take the opportunity to introduce myself and talk about the issue at the same time

Who Am I?
I’m the Tech Guy, and my team and I are responsible for keeping the site up and running. We implement new features on the site, maintain and monitor our systems to ensure that the videos keep streaming, and build toolsets for our internal teams to use for encoding and labelling content. In short, we’re responsible for everything from networking to storage, from servers to systems, and from code to video codecs. Now that I’ve introduced myself, let me talk about the issue we’ve run into.

The iPhone 3g / 2.0 Problem
Recently the iPhone 3g was released, and like most tech geeks we were really excited. Quite a few of us have iPhones, and we couldn’t wait to see what the new one could do. Unfortunately, when we got our hands on an iPhone 3g we immediately saw a problem - iPod resolution files from VideoBox wouldn’t play. We saw a “This Movie Format Not Supported” message when we tried to play these files on the new iPhone. The problem got worse quickly, when we realized that older iPhones that were updated to the iPhone 2.0 firmware suffered from the same problem.

Now this was surprising, as Apple had said that there were no video related changes coming in the 3g or the 2.0 firmware. But we’re not the only ones who’ve been bitten by this issue - you can see more here

The good news is that we’re on top of it. Our H.264 resolution files can still be played on iPhones of all types. And we’ve found an encoding configuration that is compatible with the iPhone, compatible with older iPods and other devices that play these files, and still maintains the quality of video we expect.

What We’re Doing About It
We’re currently in the process of reencoding all the files in this resolution. We expect to be finished with this reencode process in about three weeks. These updated files will appear on the site as they are produced, so fewer and fewer scenes will have this problem as time goes on.

I’ll be checking back on this blog post over the next few days, and I’ll try to answer any questions you may have about this or any other tech issue in the comments. I’m also planning on posting more frequently - once a month or so - about technology issues that might be interesting to our users.

Chasey Lain Has Lost Her Mind

I think we can all agree that Chasey Lain ain’t what she used to be. In a lot of ways. But that fact did not prepare me for these two videos, released by a website producer who’d hired her for a shoot.

Chasey shows up to the shoot completely cracked out and proceeds to slur, stumble and curse her way through a nonsensical argument with the director that lasts for hours. Luckily, they condensed it down into 12 minutes of absolute trainwreck for easy consumption.

Part of me feels bad for Chasey and part of me finds it hard to pity someone who is so disagreeable and crazy, but all of me wonders why people are hiring her in this condition.

Today in New Breasts: Teagan Presley

You guys know I’m not a fan of the fake breasts. That said, when Genesis posted pics of Teagan’s new boobs today, I had to admit they’re a step up from the old fakes.

Eva Angelina’s Having a Girl

Eva Angelina
Genesis Magazine is reporting that Eva Angelina will be taking a hiatus from porn because she’s expecting a baby in December. My congratulations to Eva.

I’ll admit that the second thing I thought when I read the news was “will she be able to breast feed with her implants?” The answer appears to be maybe. Some doctors think that as long as the implants are in tact, there’s no possibility of harm to the mother or the baby. Others disagree. According to S. Lori Brown, Ph.D., an epidemiologist in FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, “many women with implants are unable to breast-feed successfully.” The reasons for this are unclear.

Seems like yet another reason not to get fakes. Hopefully, Eva won’t have any problems. I wish her the very best.

Max Hardcore Convicted on Obscenity Charges

Max HardcoreI’ve never been a fan of Max Hardcore. I don’t like his movies and I’ve heard rumors about the way he conducts business that give me pause. That said, I’m pretty pissed off that he was found guilty of distributing obscenity last Thursday. The following is, obviously, my own personal opinion.

It is entirely unbelievable to me that sex acts between consenting adults are subject to any kind of government scrutiny whatsoever in the US. If someone wants to be paid to have her head shoved in a toilet bowl while she’s being verbally abused and doggy-styled and someone else wants to pay to watch that, it’s absolutely none of anyone’s business. Not mine, not my elderly next door neighbor’s, not the government’s.

When I was a little younger and a little more willing to accept that obscenity laws were just a fact of life in this business, I felt that people like Max Hardcore were screwing it up for the rest of us. If folks like him would quit making movies that attract attention, the government would leave the porn industry alone. That was naive.

Attacking producers like Hardcore is just going for the low-hanging fruit. When the government’s agenda is nosing around in people’s bedrooms, no one is safe. The UK recently passed a law banning “violent” pornography. Canada’s obscenity laws are shockingly idiotic. Many countries continue to ban pornography outright.

I think for most people, it’s very difficult to stand up and say that you’re pro-pornography and you want to put an end to this ridiculousness. But this kind of activism is long overdue, both inside the industry and in society at large. Jenna Jameson to Star in “Mainstream” Movie

Jenna JamesonAccording to Variety, vehemently ex-pornstar Jenna Jameson will have a starring role in the as yet un-IMDB’d movie War of the Dragon. I think the main reason that this is considered news is that the movie is not a horror film - the traditional domain of starring “mainstream” roles for pornstars.

According to the Variety story, the movie is about “a psychic and a martial arts expert who team to find the killers of their mothers.” I couldn’t even make this stuff up.

Erica Campbell Finds God, Leaves Porn

Playboy Playmate and Penthouse Pet Erica Campbell>
Erica Campbell, for anyone who isn’t familiar, is a gorgeous Playboy Playmate (and Penthouse Pet and Danni’s Hot Box Model, etc.) who
announced recently that she is done with porn for good.

Erica was clearly in a lot of pain: “For a long time I have been very lost. So lost in myself and in the world that I didn’t even REALIZE that I was lost. [...] For a long time I THOUGHT that I was doing the right thing…..and doing my personal best……well…I was wrong…dead wrong.” She chose to leave the business when she found religion: “I have decided to leave the world of adult and porn behind me….and follow the lord. I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and am devoting my life to HIS WILL. I have found the one thing that can, will and DOES fill that void…and that’s GOD.”

She goes on to talk about other women in the industry: “SO many lost girls get into this business just for some extra money….to help pay for school….to help support themselves or even their children as single moms. [...] Almost ALL of the time It doesn’t end where you think it will…..the path goes on……the hole gets deeper….and the road gets darker. MOST of the time the girls don’t even realize it.”

It appears that Ms. Campbell very much regrets her choice to pose nude and has decided to stop. I completely respect that. It’s not a life everyone can live. On the other hand, I think that calling women who do choose that life “lost girls” is more than a little bit judgmental and condescending. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: women who choose to make money by taking off their clothes/having sex are not all the same and they aren’t necessarily damaged by it. Clearly, Erica Campbell was not happy with this career. That doesn’t give her the right to speak for everyone else.

If you’re interested in Erica’s body of work, you can check out her galleries on Freeones.

Update: Nina Hartley made a very interesting presentation to NOW in LA about working in porn and how it “can be empowering for some women, and utterly disastrous for many women; utterly disastrous.” You can read the transcript on AVN.

We’re on our 3rd CDN trial, again as noted this is focused on improving the site image load performance time. As usual testing was done before flipping the switch on. Our particular interest is if European users are seeing faster page loading time with this feature. Please comment with your feedback.

Per the last trial, we have for some time now implemented a number of well-known tricks to optimize image delivery. This includes spreading the load between four hostnames, as mentioned by commenter dweazy - along with proper cache HTTP response headers, stripping JPG metadata comments.

Want to Make Porn? Here’s Your Chance

When I saw this on AVN, I knew I had to post it. Apparently, Courtney Cummz (former Zero Tolerance contract girl, current pornstar for hire) is hosting a three-day seminar in Florida at the end of March to teach people how to make porn. It’s called Porn Camp. That’s right, Porn Camp.

The whole thing costs $4k (which probably doesn’t include room and board). That might be really cheap or a fortune depending on who you are and why you’re at porn camp. I’ve not seen any of Ms. Cummz’s directorial work, so I won’t hazard a guess about the quality of the instruction to be had, but if you really can learn how to set up a production company, book talent, shoot scenes, get a distributor and win an AVN award, I guess it’s a good deal.

Oh, and according to the website, “YOU WILL SHOOT AN ADULT FILM SCENE DURING THE SEMINAR.” Sadly, they don’t have a list of the talent. That’s porn for ya.

Update: Apparently Sean Michaels is having a similar seminar starting tomorrow in the LA area. Evidently, teaching people how to make porn has become a cottage industry.

Jenna Jameson Retires from Porn. Again.

I haven’t covered much in the way of industry news in this blog yet, but that’s mostly due to the dearth of actual news generated by the industry. But Jenna Jameson managed to make actual news last Saturday at the AVN Awards by very ungraciously announcing her intention to “never ever ever spread [her] legs in this industry ever” while presenting the award named in her honor. You can watch the video of her speech here.

Because I managed to catch a hell of a cold at the AVN show, I’ve had some time to sit and reflect on this incident. Many in the industry are taking it as the ultimate slap in the face from a woman whom many of them personally helped make very wealthy and famous.

Jenna’s relationship with porn is a complicated one (if you’ve read her book you know what I mean) and it should surprise no one that she’s lashing out against it yet again. What comes as a surprise to me, personally, is how much everyone seems to care. This may be a controversial stance, but in my opinion, Jenna Jameson hasn’t mattered in the adult industry in a long time. She stopped shooting movies several years ago and has devoted her time to running her own marginally popular company, appearing on basic cable and getting bad plastic surgery. I’ll be the first one to admit that Jenna was a powerhouse in the 1990’s - beautiful, smart, and most of all, profitable. But as she became the “crossover star” her AVN Award indicates, she left porn behind in search of C-list celebrity.

At this point, Jenna is one of the worst spokespersons we could have. She does nothing good for the industry by repeatedly trying to escape it. What porn really needs is someone like Stormy Daniels, the recipient of Jenna’s “crossover star of the year” award. A woman who loves her job, loves her fans, and who can proudly say (as she did), “I plan on spreading my legs for this industry for quite some time!” Representing a maligned industry is a hard job - one that Jenna is clearly not cut out for anymore. So I say: Let her go. We’re all better off.
